Intro to Broadcast Journalism (Manchester)

Our Introduction to Broadcast Journalism lets you discover what it takes to become a broadcast journalist for radio. This free, practical course is designed for anyone interested in radio, podcasts, news or storytelling, whether you're exploring a new career, developing your confidence, or simply want to learn new skills.

You'll learn the fundamentals of broadcast journalism, from finding stories and conducting interviews to writing for radio and recording professional quality audio. You'll work alongside experienced broadcasters, create your own content, and gain the confidence to tell stories that matter.

Course Layout

Introduction to Broadcast Journalism

Discover the role of a broadcast journalist, understand what makes a great story, and explore how newsrooms work across radio, podcasts and digital platforms.

Finding Stories & Interviewing

Learn how to identify newsworthy stories, research topics, prepare interview questions and conduct engaging interviews with confidence.

Writing & Audio Production

Develop your writing for broadcast, understand scripting techniques, and record high-quality audio using professional equipment.

News Reporting in Practice

Put your new skills into action by creating your own radio news package, audio feature and social media content, from planning through to production.

Publishing Your Story & Next Steps

Share your work, receive personalised feedback, and explore progression opportunities within the Gaydio Skills Academy, including advanced training and volunteer pathways.

Location, Dates and Times

Location: Gaydio, Suite 14c, Manchester One, 53 Portland Street, M1 3LF

Cohort 1 

Date:  Thursday 6th to Tuesday 11th August 2026 (No Session Sunday 9th August)

Time:  10:30am to 4:00pm

Cohort 2 

Date:  Thursday 13th to Tuesday 18th August 2026 (No Session Sunday 16th August)

Time:  10:30am to 4:00pm

Cost: Free for all participants (that meet the criteria below)

 

Criteria

  • You must be 18+

  • You must be living in the North West.

  • Must be available for the dates above including the Saturday.
