The Gaydio Academy in partnership with Awards For All Brighton delivered radio and work skills training, peer support and mentoring as part of 'Intro to Radio 2023'.

Learners took their first steps in radio, got an overview of the industry as a whole and then moved on to create content to help promote mental health in the city and create podcasts.

All 27 learners saw themselves enrolled into the industry whilst benefiting from one-to-one support and onward volunteering opportunities.

Intro to Radio

This course saw participants in five informal training sessions, over a single week, located at Wrap Brighton.

Course Layout

  1. Introduction to radio and how to become a radio presenter

  2. How to plan content and news presenting

  3. Other roles in radio and the music business

  4. Creating your own station and radio interview preparation

  5. Conduct an interview and explore next steps at Gaydio and beyond

News Demo

During one session, participants took part in creating a news report from scratch and recorded this live. Taking current news stories, they constructed a journalist layout to present this on-air. Individually, they recorded and then edited this down to the final feature. Please see below one example, created and voiced by David, Brad & Terran:

Podcasting

The end goal of the week was for each participant to produce a podcast in a group that they could take away with them on topics the groups could relate to but also along the lines of mental health and the LGBTQ+ community. The podcasts were designed to be similar to podcasts that could be heard on streaming platforms. Below are the podcasts on Trans Awareness (Corinnia & Liren):

Help & Support Pages

The core outcome of this course was to promote talking about mental health and the issues faced in the LGBTQ+ community, especially in Brighton. Below is a selection of topics and within those helpful organisations and companies which you can call on for help if you or someone you know is struggling.

  • Wrap Brighton

Wrap Brighton is a unique working space for anyone in Brighton. Their team are working parents of young kids, and were fed up with the daily gauntlet of buses and backseats, constantly rushing back and forth between lives, having to leave one early but still arriving late at the next. So theyve designed a place where all the family can Work, Rest and Play.
